The Audi A5 will get an all-new, 2.0-litre turbocharged engine as a more fuel-efficient alternative to the 3.0-litre V6.

Forget adding yet another petrol engine! Where is the A5 2.0TDi?

Production of A5 170ps 2.0tdi will begin in August '08. Should see in Uk showrooms in September/October.

Mind you with the £ of diesel at the mo' this new valvelift engine could be ideal alternative. Its very similar on torque output across the rev range (a usual diesel strong point) and the petrol has more ponies for when you need to give it some stick  ;)

Quattro, why do you want the 2.0TDI? What is better than 208bhp, 258lb.ft of torque, developed from only 1500rpm, and combined 42.8mpg? I'm at a genuine loss to understand why this would be seen as inferior. It goes without saying that this is besides diesel being on average 13p/litre or 10% plus more expensive than petrol in the UK. Please explain it to me. Thanks.

I agree entirely - I have recently decided to buy a petrol rather than a diesel (after 15 years on the oil) but why is this seemingly superb engine only in the A4 and A5 - why not the A3, Golf etc. More economical and faster. I would buy an A5 but no room in the back for anyone over 5' 11"! Come on Audi.

Quattro, why do you want the 2.0TDI?

Were money not an object i would consider the 2.0T as an option and i am sure that in terms of driveability it may well be the sweet spot of the range however, the 2.0TDI would be my option for the following reasons:

(1) Residuals: The TDI will have a similar purchase but lose less money over the typical 3yr period.

(2) Running costs: Forget 'official' fuel consumption figures. In my experience a diesel returns at least 25% better fuel economy than an equivalent petrol model so this more than makes up for the higher price of diesel. Not the mention cheaper road tax, insurance and servicing.

(3) Ease of Resale:  CO2 figures will become much more important in the coming years as more and more parking, congestion charge (and predicted pay-per-mile schemes) become co2 based - i would want to keep this fugure as low as possible.

 

I appreciate my reasons are pretty much finacially based but in addition to this after having had my first diesel for 2 years now i am sold on its driveability. I actually like the noise and the rush or torque at low revs becomes addictive. I know people will say the 2.0T is very torquey too, but i still doubt it would feel the same as the diesel. Anyway there is no right or wrong answer, it all comes down the personal taste and preference. At least we still have a choice!
