V6 Diesel, in a BMW? An unusual mistake for Autocar.

I know its all been said before, but if you have around £45k to spend on a car that handles well but can only seat two in comfort - why would you get one of these?  It must weigh around 2.5 tons! All that extra weight means it only handles well "for a 4x4" I just dont get it.

This car is clearly pointless and can only be dismissed as a pose-mobile. It advances, nor betters anything else on the road. To be described as the best handling SUV available is wrong because as the video shows it clearly isn't a Utility Vehicle, only a Sports vehicle. And if you need to go fast on country roads then for £45k there are plenty of other choices. Yup, thats the problem here. This isn't an SUV, it's an SV so to compare it with a Range Rover Sport or Porsche Cayenne is like comparing foie gras to aspic jelly. Different roles.

The video hardly makes a strong case for the car over a 535d on any practical basis - if performance and handling have to be qualified with 'for a 4x4' they're obviously compromised. If I wanted a car to pose in, I'd far rather pose in something that might draw stares of admiration, rather than frowns of disapproval. Clearly something that doesn't trouble all those who have ordered one!

Well just like all reviews some facts are wrong.

I have covered 150 miles at the wheel of the X635D and my findings are somewhat diferent.

Firstly the rear seats have "Plenty of room for 6ft people", I set-up the drives seat and them got in the rear ( I am 6' 1") and had NO problems at all, width wise it very roomy.

I found more people wanting to stop and chat about the car than refer to me in any way with the use of "the Finger".

Economy was 36MPG in out of town driving, which is very good for a new car with 20 miles on the clock from  my test start.

I found no problems seeing out of the rear window, and the large rear veiw mirrors were great and caused no wind noise up to 80MPH.

I have ordered one for september, Deep Sea Blue with Oyster leather and can not wait til it arrives.

I take it by your forum name that you are the ultimate BMW lover, if so, how can you offer an objective view?

I love Alfa's and Maserati's and can confirm I could not offer a view without it being one sided.

    However, enjoy your new purchase.

    Supernumerary Ample Car

I saw one in Stockholm the other day and it's truely gastly and fills no gaps in the car industry if you ask me.

It's not a SUV nor a Coupe, it's a cup of -ulgy- soup.

On the other hand, it's apparently a well handling car for its size so I guess if you like the looks and want to drive quickly without tall people in the back
    , buy a M3 anyway.

Simply, the car in totally unnecessary.

Good looking? What side of the ugly car design bed did you wake up on? This has to be the most polarizing design ever created by the Munich-based propeller brand and the vast majority of people (just read your forum responses for a snippet) consider it to be a heinous monstrosity - and rightly so.

It may appeal to the affluent and image conscious who’d want it as a style statement, but saying that the first year of cars have already sold out is misleading. How many are they building? Is it such an insignificant number because BMW are still testing the waters to see if their newcomer is sought after? Handling aside - and let's be serious for a second shall we? Who in their right mind would buy the X6 because of its handling? - there is nothing sensible nor appealing about this product other than it being something different. Having driven this car I can attest that there are far better handling cars that offer more practicality and don't weigh more than 2 tonnes.

And the Chelsea tractor image? I'd say that is definitely well-deserved. It even sounds like one!
