Richard Bremner on the Pug 605 & 607 ... and automotive design

    Jun 22, 2008 5:23 AM

I agree with Richard that the 605 was a fine-handling car with and engine portfolio that was ill-advised.  I had both the 605 SRi and the 605 SVE 3.0.  Both were automatics and the 2.0 could have definitely used a turbocharger to overcome its weight problem.

While the interior design lacked flair, it was the first Peugeot interior and dashboard that could withstand the test of time and be free of rattles, which is commendable indeed.  I did find the 3.0 liter V6 to be rather enjoyable even if thirsty and I think the main problem was the automatic gearbox having only 4 forward ratios.

I disagree with Richard's comments on the 607.  I think it is actually one of the best and most cohesive Pug designs ever, regardless of whether Pininfarina had a hand in it or not.  The subsequent 407, 207 and 308 have regrettably gone the same way as BMW's current 5-series and 3-series.

In fact most new designs seem to have gone in the wrong direction - BMW X6, Jaguar XF, Ford Mondeo, Honda Accord and Mercedes S-Class.

The best looking cars on sale or coming on to the market, in my eyes, are the Land Rover LRX, the Citroen C5 and C6, the Audi A5, A6, A8 and TT, Merc's new C-Class, the Mazda 6 and Honda's strange but somehow attractive CRV. Needless to say, Aston Martin has beautiful design language and the Maserati Gran Tourismo is a beauty indeed.

I still love the Bentley Arnage design after so many decades and think the Continental Fying Spur is uglier than a 7-series.  Bentley needs someone like Pininfarina to help them with new designs .............

Or maybe I'm just getting old ..............
