The 3 Series is BMW's commercial backbone and it shows. The latest car is so good to drive that no rival even gets close – Audi, justly proud of its new A4, must be gutted. But the styling tries so hard to avoid the controversy that's stuck to the 5 Series that it backfires. Now it's just controversially dull.
