Despite being an early pioneer of mainstream people-carriers, it's taken Citroen a while to enter the growing compact MPV segment. The new C3 Picasso, which made its official debut at the Paris show, is intended to compete against the Vauxhall Meriva, Nissan Note and Renault Modus.

Of course, Citroen already offers the van-based Berlingo, but the new C3 Picasso is meant to be more stylish and slightly less utilitarian. Inside it is finished to a high standard, and packed with neat details that include a split folding rear seat that can be collapsed with one hand movement. Headroom is outstanding and the extensive glazing will make it a light, pleasant place to sit.

When the car goes on sale in the UK, engine choice will include both 95bhp and 120bhp versions of the new PSA-BMW 1.6-litre petrol engine, plus a pair of frugal HDI diesels.
