Formula One’s elder statesman David Coulthard has announced that he will retire from the top level of motorsport at the end of this season.
The 37-year-old Scot, who made his F1 debut with the Williams team at the Spanish GP in 1994, has said that he will remain a consultant to his current employer, Red Bull Racing – although his announcement is likely to spark speculation that he will end up as part of the commentary team when F1 switches from ITV to the BBC in 2009.
“I have an open mind as to whether or not I will compete again in the future, in some other form of motorsport” said Coulthard, “so I am definitely not hanging up my helmet. I am proud of my work at Red Bull Racing and will continue to race with the same focus until the last lap in Brazil.”
Coulthard will retire with over 230 GP starts to his name, and 13 victories. Red Bull has yet to announce a replacement for 2009 but the move is likely to mean promotion for the highly rated Toro Rosso driver Sebastian Vettel.
