These are the first official pictures of the new Dodge Challenger SRT8.

We won't see the final production car in all its glory until the Chicago motor show in February 2008, but that didn't stop more than 6000 people placing deposits when order books opened in America three days ago.

Considering initial production of the 6.1-litre Hemi V8 muscle car is predicted to be around 5000 units, some customers will be waiting a very long time.

The news is even worse if you live in Europe, as the Challenger is unlikely to be officially imported.

It's believed that the cost of converting the cars to right-hand drive was too high to justify a European model.

But there is still hope. List price in America starts at only £19,795 ($40,095) – less than £20k thanks to the weak US dollar at the moment.

Buyers will be paying well over list with demand so strong, but even so we reckon the Challenger will be the hottest import around. Keep an eye on your local American import specialist and start saving now.
