Verdict
There is, presumably, a department at Ingolstadt where phrases like “energy crisis” and “dwindling resources” are banned, where no one poses questions about fuel economy and residual values, and where staff can stroll in and wonder, “How fast can we make an estate car go?” And once you’ve overcome any unease you might feel about a 2.2-tonne estate car that has not just a 5.0-litre engine derived from a Lamborghini ahead of its front axle, but two turbochargers bolted to it too, the RS6 proves an immensely convincing device.
Its ride is composed, it is nearly as capacious as any car in the class and is hardly the worse for being less overtly sporting and agile than a BMW M5 Touring. Yes, it is expensive and profligate, but that makes its sledgehammer engineering no less compelling. We may not see another one like it.
