Road Test
Audi A3 Sportback 2.0 TDi Sport
Test Date 21 September 2004
Price When New £20,840
Verdict
Does the Sportback do enough to justify its own niche? We don’t think so. Although a little extra room over the three-door is welcome, there isn’t enough difference to lift it above being simply a five-door A3.
And, once again, this is an Audi that appeals more at the kerbside than on the open road. Despite the benefits of independent rear suspension, the Sportback is not a car you’ll drive just for the sake of it.
Nevertheless, it plays to Audi’s established strengths, having a superbly built interior and an expensive aura. That it offers more practicality than a BMW 1-series will suit those looking for space over driving fun.
