Central driving position remains rare in supercardom

McLaren F1

Test date 11 May 1994  Price as tested £540,000

There is the stuff of genius in this cabin, no question about it. The driving position is without rival. The placing of the pedals, the rake of the steering wheel and its location relative to the gearlever are as close to perfection as you’ll find. The pedals and wheel position can be adjusted, but only by the factory, who will tailor the car to the driver before delivery.

Each F1 takes three-and-a-half months to build; large luxury saloons can be mass-produced in little more than a day. Thanks to its carbonfibre construction, it possesses a sense of indomitable strength and McLaren has also paid such attention to the all-important details such as the way the doors close, the stitching of the leather, the exorcism of all rough edges.

But we have some reservations – the minor controls are too far away from your line of sight for comfort, and rear visibility is also a problem.
