Jump back 11 years and few could have predicted that farmers’ favourite Subaru would sire a world-famous performance car. But in 1994 the Impreza Turbo arrived and became part of rally lore. Even today the turbocharged WRX makes up over 70 per cent of Impreza sales, which leaves the staid Legacy to carry hay bales and gun dogs for the faithful. Last year’s much-praised all-new Legacy was a step in the right direction, but it remains a tiny player in the family car market. Now Subaru is adding some WRX-appeal to its most grown-up model with the Spec B.
