It’s hard to remember that, before the Mazda 6 was introduced four years ago, Mazda was a one horse manufacturer, its brand defined by the MX-5, with rather a lot of mangy nags no-one wanted to talk about making up the rest of the ranges. Now Mazda is actually quite cool, with a multi-model portfolio of product from the Mazda 2 to the RX-8 that, with certain exceptions, is one to be proud of.

And it’s almost all thanks to this, the Mazda 6, the car that appeared in 2002 with a range of qualities we’d not seen in a Mazda and which has spent the intervening years transforming our preconceptions of the brand.
